Same with houses building on the infamous Dune Road here.  Houses about the same distance to the ocean and only what looks like a 5 to 8 foot dune protecting them.  Easily can be taken out by a TS

👍👍. Precisely. 9 foot surge is not that freaky.

Are you crazy?

I pinned that on the Google map below, showing an expanded view of the road closures on the interstates…

This looks pretty dire. One of the towns downstream from the Lake Lure Dam

Any update on whether it collapsed, or still just overtopped?

The report I saw was that the sides had eroded, but the dam structure was intact. But that was a few hours ago

I posted about it in the main US forum, but this blew away the previous record for lowest barometric pressure for a tropical system or extratropical remnant for the state of Kentucky.  Nothing else is even close.  Helene was still about 982 mb when it entered the state.

My sister went to school there in Johnson City and our family vacations in Beech Mountain NC. I hope both places are doing ok.

So a quick funny story amidst the sad carnage. Accuweather has a few weather channels right next to tTWC on Directv. They are a big step down from TWC. Um, they like to sensationalize. So the interviewer asks some neighbors standing over a bridge in NC today, where there was flooding and a rising river. Interviewer” Guess you’ve never seen anything like this?”.  Neighbor, “ the river has been much higher. We have seen it at the top of this bridge, so not that bad”. The interviewer actually stuttered for a few seconds, and then just punted.
