Nicaragua was pretty dangerous.  I got a chance to bribe the cops and also pay someone to keep my rental car safe while I shopped.  However, we did get to see up close sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach ( our escorts were carrying machine gun though).  We also spent part of the day on a beautiful beach and we were the only people out there.  The volcano was really cool but the country needs to be a little safer before I visit again.  My wife picked the trip because she said it was supposed to be like Costa Rica without the tourists.  We found out why the tourists stay away, and I don't blame them.

I was going to mention ALL of that. Nica is such an awfully unstable place - beautiful as it is dangerous. I spoke to dozen if not hundreds of Nicas on our trips to CR. They flee the brutal dictator's edicts. One fella told me that the money I gave him for a cigar was the same as what his TAKE HOME pay would be for working TWELVE hours in the coffee fields (7D/Week - rain OR shine). Many of them walk south to CR instead of trying to make it to the USA. He said that when a male becomes military age (and are otherwise healthy) they MUST go into the military. I asked what happens if they don't want to soldier - he made a finger bang move to his head. 😮 He said that the money he made hawking cigars, he has to smuggle back into Nica for his family and that one day he hopes they can join him. (they were not all physically able to walk to CR).

How cool you got to see a sea turtle lay eggs. We also had that awesome experience out on a beach walk one day. A Tico we had befriended (Daniel) saw us from down the beach and was, frantically, waving his hat to get our attention and motioned for us to come near. As we did, we saw her just start to dig her shallow bed. We stayed well away, yet close enough to see - he knew not to crowd. Sadly our watching drew attention of other "tourists" who were not as respectful. However, the local beach patrol also saw them pressing in and they came in an forced all those gawkers back to where Daniel had us watching from. They too were armed but they did not once even come close to unholstering their weapons. After she returned to the sea, they carefully gathered the eggs and took them to a "tent compound" where they buried them anew until they hatch out. When they do hatch, the same officials will "guard" the hatchlings to the sea.

Many "americanos" do go to CR - not to worry - it's a big and beautiful country and I've never met anyone who ever expressed regret over going. 🙂

Great video of eclipse last week focusing on USA from Goes East Satellite.  You can clearly see both the umbra & penumbra in this video.  Plus you get a good view of the cloud cover and can see who got a clear view and who had to deal with cloud cover.  I was very fortunate in NE Ohio (just a little west of Cleveland) that the thicker cloud cover moves east mid to late morning on the 8th.  We had just a very thin cloud cover which basically caused no issues with viewing the eclipse.

Another eclipse video I found.

This girl did an excellent job at showing the experience of a total solar eclipse.

She traveled to the Ohio countryside to show everybody what a total solar eclipse is like.    She really did a great job in this 11 minute video.

This is such a great video.  It had me reliving the moment.

One of the clips of her right before totality show mosquitos flying all around her head.  That was the same thing that happened to us.  We were swarmed by mosquitoes right at the same time.

My first thought when it went total was, "Oh My God", I couldn't believe what I was seeing.  I then gave the eclipse a slow clap then took a sip of my Corona beer while watching the corona.  I then told my wife I could see why people long ago would start throwing virgins in the volcano if something like this happened and you weren't expecting it.

Thanks for posting this video.  This is the best one I've seen.

This video was done in Cleveland during the eclipse using a drone.   I was only about 8 to 10 miles from here.  We were staying in Westlake, Ohio and had just been in downtown Cleveland sightseeing the day before.   The guy who did this video did a great job.  It is a FB link.
