Is this common? Spoiler Backcountry Avalanche Warning Forest Service Mount Washington Avalanche Center, Gorham NH Relayed by National Weather Service Gray ME 717 AM EDT Sat Mar 23 2024 The following message is transmitted at the request of the Forest Service Mount Washington Avalanche Center, Gorham NH. The Mount Washington Avalanche Center in Gorham has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas: NWS Gray ME - NHZ002 (Coos County) * WHAT...A significant winter storm bringing 10 - 20+ inches of snow will create very dangerous avalanche conditions today, March 23, 2024 through Sunday, March 24, 2024. Steep slopes; including but not limited to: Tuckerman Ravine, Huntington Ravine, Gulf of Slides, Great Gulf, and Ammonoosuc Ravine are areas where dangerous and destructive avalanches are likely. These avalanches may be large enough to bury multiple people, do significant damage to trees or buildings and will likely run far down in paths or to areas that are normally considered safe zones. AVOIDING ALL AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS ADVISED. * WHERE...The Presidential Range avalanche forecast area, including Tuckerman, Huntington Ravine, Gulf of Slides, Great Gulf, Ammonoosuc Ravine and steep, open terrain in the mountains that are bounded by US Rt 2, US Rt 302, and NH Rt 16. This includes hiking trails that traverse across steep terrain like Summer Lion Head trail. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area where steep, open terrain exists that has collected wind drifted snow. * WHEN...In effect from Sat 07:00 EDT to Sun 07:00 EDT. * IMPACTS...Heavy snow and wind will create widespread unstable snow conditions. Very large snow drifts that could avalanche spontaneously or easily from the weight of a person will exist throughout steep terrain including hiking trails. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Avoiding all avalanche terrain is advised. Very large destructive avalanches may run long distances into mature forests, valley floors, trails, and flat terrain that is normally considered safe. Backcountry travelers should expect strong winds, limited visibility and white-out conditions. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of this or any avalanche center. Given the heavy and wet nature of so much snow, conditions sure seem favorable for the pack to be able to transport energy/mass quite easily. TheRex
Looking at spotter reports on line, there seems to be a lot of double-digit snowfall reports in @telejunkie's area. Central VT looks like the winner in the state of VT for this storm. The ski resorts down that way really needed it for spring skiing purposes. Good to see them getting this storm. 1

It seems the snow rate has picked up as the storm starts to bomb. Our forecast was for possible heavy snow this afternoon. Maybe we will see that before it ends.
Moderators telejunkie Posted March 23 Moderators Share Posted March 23 I stayed down at my house in Manchester last night and tonight for a quicker commute to the restaurant job. Had about 9" down when I woke up around 9am. Been a mix of sleet/snow/fzr since here and we have added another 2" of frozen cement since...so would estimate 11" here so far. Interested to see what's happening up north at the Danby house....radar returns look like it's less sleet/fzr up that way. Either way...will be good base to get out for my first day in the BC tomorrow.
chaser915
I am at one of the lowest spots in our county. Probably 2 inches of slush. It was raining but just flipped back to snow. 33F We did get upgraded to a warning, lot of ice predicted here. 30-40 miles north of me getting near a foot.

My in-laws live between Saratoga and Albany and I was wondering if there was snow falling over that way. Maybe you'll get dumped on before the storm ends. I heard ratios will be good at the end. 1

But it also reports that sleet is mixing in with the snow. I bet your higher elevation will really help you avoid the freezing rain. 1
