Jan. 15-17th, 2024 | NE/MidAtl Winter Storm

SUMMARY...Locally moderate winter precipitation rates will spread
northeastward this morning, with some modest ice accretion possible
   where freezing rain persists.

DISCUSSION...A surface low currently off of the Mid Atlantic coast
is forecast to gradually deepen as it moves northeast toward coastal
southern New England this morning. Multiple waves of light to
locally moderate precipitation are ongoing and will continue to
spread northeastward in conjunction with the surface low. While
interior portions of the Northeast will likely continue to see snow
(with generally light to moderate rates) this morning, low-level
warm advection will support a transition from snow to sleet across
parts of southern New England, with freezing rain persisting over
portions of the Mid Atlantic region.

As the low deepens offshore, a modest uptick in precipitation
intensity will be possible through the morning. While rates will
likely remain light to locally moderate, antecedent cold conditions
(with temperatures initially in the 20s F) may result in relatively
efficient ice accretion in areas that transition to freezing rain.
Pockets of moderate sleet/snow will also be possible into parts of
southern New England. Low-level warm advection will support a
gradual transition to rain along the Mid Atlantic and southern New
England coasts, but subfreezing temperatures may persist inland
   through the morning.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, you need to switch out your summer air out of your tires and replace it with winter air.  Its very easy.  Deflate all your tires to 0 so all that warm summer air gets out.  Then pump them back up with winter air (the air pump handles the cold air conversion for you).

You will need a tire pressure gauge to verify that they are all at 0.  For those of you with cars that measure and show the air pressure for each tire on the console, you may have to drive it around a bit to get the reading to show 0.

Is that why I am not getting the mileage I should out of my all season tires?  I wonder, maybe if I go where the elevation is higher I can get better winter air, you know, being lower pressure and all.

That is your best bet.  The higher the elevation, the more crisp and better the winter air is up there.

Unfortunate hole in SCPA. 😞

The hole west of Williamsport is not real. Radar outage impacting that.

It's still snowing here - at least in Carlisle and Harrisburg. Pins and needle snow for sure so not adding to the total very quickly. I'm good if we only get what we have so far - I'd like to get out and start clean up though and it won't stop snowing 😞

Yuck here. The heavy bands in hburg last night never really got here, off. And the backfill for today that was supposed to add about 2 more looks shaky also.

Slipped and fell onto the replaced hip while walking out to the car to take Mrs Bill to work. Nothing serious, but felt scar tissue tearing at the incision - didn't feel nice at all.

Nothing falling here at the moment, 2.5" down.

The State College radar seems to be down for awhile.. it is snowing steadily despite the radar showing a hole in north central PA.

Nice! Ive had a very light dendrite fall for about 2 hrs. Not enough to do accumulate anything. Very similar to the precipitate after a large one trucks through.

Still 23 degrees F and 89% humidity in Carlisle, PA.  Light snow not accumulating, but is keeping even the streets white.  Pretty.

Anybody have any short range models coming out? I am on the road

Vehicles all iced up, roads are fine, too bad wasn't all snow or would be close to 5-6", nothing is easy!

Friday looks to be shaping up nicely.

I don't like to play "what if" - yet had all these congealed, like Euro wanted to in long range, it would've delivered.

As is - this is pretty much how most meso models had it - we see the "anchor" piece starting to move along now that embedded jet streaks round the base of our longwave trough

Guess we'll wait for a Big-Unimage.thumb.png.11367c4c9c10f5ba03557ac3d69f5ba3.png
