Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA
641 PM EST Mon Jan 15 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
A coastal storm will bring a period of accumulating snow and some
ice late tonight into Tuesday, changing to rain near the south
coast. Blustery and cold Wednesday and Thursday. Another coastal
storm may impact the region Friday into Friday night but details are
uncertain. Blustery and quite cold next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
640 PM update...

Not much change in expected onset timing of snow, generally
around midnight near the south coast, reaching northern MA
around 3 AM. Only change was to increase PoPs to reflect
categorical occurrence of snow overnight.

Previous discussion...

Mostly clear skies early this afternoon are quickly filling in from
south to north as warm advection brings north an increasingly moist
airmass (giggity). This comes out ahead of a shortwave that rounds the base of
the broader trough tonight and swings through Southern New England
tomorrow along with a surface reflection that lifts north off the
mid Atlantic and New England coast. 12Z guidance has come in a bit
more amplified and this has led to a northwest shift in the track of
the surface low. Now, essentially all guidance takes it between Cape
Cod and the 40/70 benchmark. This amplification has led to a slight
increase in expected snow for interior SNE, generally 3-5 inches for
the high terrain, 1-3 elsewhere. This will be an extended period of
light snow (sometimes moderate), starting along the south coast
tonight around midnight reaching northern MA by 3 AM. Through about
7-8am the entire column should be below freezing allowing everyone
to remain as snow. However, as the low lifts northeast winds will
begin to shift from the northeast becoming easterly then southerly
allowing warmer air to push north. This elevated warm nose moves
into the south coast of MA/RI by 7-8am leading to a period of a few
hours where sleet and freezing rain is possible until the
subfreezing surface air is dislodged and things change to all rain.
The greatest risk for this transition to bring an icy mix will be
from eastern CT, through RI, and into northeast MA. This will also
be happening during/after the morning rush hour. In this region a
Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for potential of a few
hundredths of an inch of freezing rain. Further to the northwest
where precipitation will remain snow a Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for an expected 2 to 5 inches of snow. The system then exits
and dry northwest flow will cut off any lingering snow showers by 6-
8 PM.

Good luck overnight yall

And I’m taking Friday off to go skiing at Seven Springs!

Should be some good powder if that storm materializes on Friday.

Not much qpf for us up this way but ratios expected to be 15:1 to 20:1, the fun snow to snowblow.  I've got to leave early for a long drive and my first several hours will be driving through the Adirondacks.  I'm hoping any heavier snow holds off until the afternoon.  And gonna make my way past Buffalo and see how much snow they received over the last few days and eventually drive through TN.  I hope they have the roads cleared up down there by then.

Where's the Long Island crew😎

Right here.  Suffolk has a coating on the ground and cars.  Anything untreated is sticking.  The past day or two of cold weather is helping that.  2 to 4 expected by the time I go for my morning commute, so the LIE is going to be psychotic.

I am curious now if state college bumps us up to winter storm warnings for Lancaster area. They had us at 4-6" earlier and with sterling showing the northern areas of Maryland now 5-8". Im not sure yet whether I wanna drive home tomorrow morning yet or stay down here.

Hey Everyone! Long time lurker here. I’ve been following you all since accuweather days and then disco. I’m so glad to fine you all here!

I’ve learned a lot from you all over the years just reading and following along. Figured it was time to post and join in on the fun!

Regardless of what the GFS or Euro shows we have a great storm to track and it’s always fun tracking them.

Im with you @Rickrd this thing should be nearer to the coast. I think the models will have a better handle on this come Friday evening / Saturday morning. We’ll see!

Was going to respond a few days ago and got sidetracked.  I remember you from disco.  Been to Gettysburg a few times as well.

Good to see you back.

You're probably better staying where you are only because you'll get the idiots who think their car/suv/prius/tesla can go 90 in snowy conditions and still hold onto the road.

Just as a heads-up, Tennessee could be a mess for the locals through the end of the week.  You wouldn’t be expected to have any issues, but you’ll be competing with folks who don’t use turn signals on a regular basis, so good luck to you!

Yea it really will depend on when my boss comes in. We are both in the same ball park of most of this should be done down here shortly after daybreak but now that we went to warning levels most likely they will call schools tomorrow especially since temps aren't expected to go too high.

From MU Weather Center on X: “The #WinterWeatherAdvisory has been upgraded to a #WinterStormWarning in northern MD for 4-6” of snow. Strong, dynamic lift in the circled area (2nd image) is fueling a slow-moving band of moderate-to-heavy snow. Snowfall rates could approach 1” per hour at times overnight!”
