Moderators StretchCT Posted January 9 Moderators Share Posted January 9 RAP and NBS had some of the lower wind amounts for the Erie area. But the NAM3k and RRFS were in the 80s there which doesn't seem to verify yet. But even if you take 10mph off the wind speeds of the NAM/RFFS/GFS, they're still pretty bad. Moderators StretchCT Posted January 9 Moderators Share Posted January 9 (edited) 5 minutes ago, StretchCT said: I wonder how far south you have to go before you see mentions of tornados in the AFD Wakefield has tornados mentioned. Mt Holly and Upton have convection and tstorms mentioned Spoiler Additionally, while the guidance continues to indicate that the vast majority of any sfc-based instability remains to our south/southwest, CAMs do show the potential for a narrow band of 100- 500 J/kg of MLCAPE to advect into the FA (except the Eastern Shore) this evening. Given very long, looping hodographs (0-1 SRH of 300- 400+ m2/s2) and very strong winds just above the sfc (65-75 kt at 925 mb), this HSLC environment may be enough for at least isolated severe (60-70+ mph) gusts within the strongly forced QLCS just ahead of the cold front. A brief tornado or two will also be possible (embedded within the QLCS and likely rain-wrapped if they occur). SPC has expanded the Marginal Risk (level 1/5) N to include all of the local area except our MD counties with a Slight Risk (level 2/5) across S VA/NE NC where confidence in higher instability is a bit higher and where 00z CAMs have shown some helicity tracks. The severe threat ends by 11 PM-1 AM as the QLCS moves offshore. Regardless of severe storms, the synoptic winds combined with the heavy rain have the potential to bring down a few trees across the area. SnowloverSid
NWS has just used its favorite phrase regarding this event: “complex storm system.” I am therefore expecting ordinary amounts of precipitation in Binghamton. It is just as well because it will be an umbrella event. 1

longislander
Wind gusts already bad on immediate south shore of LI - if this is any indication this early in the game, its going to be very bad across LI. I don't hear any planes landing at JFK either, I wonder if they are already being diverted.

Airy have a stream in their yard and its not significantly up. It's height is normally a good gauge of local flooding. During the great thaw after the Blizzard of 96 it went from like 4' wide to about 100' wide.
