January 6-7, 2024 | NE / Mid-Atlantic Winter Storm

Penn State

Recommended Posts

As of noon, we have surpassed 5" and the snow continues to fall at approximately a rate of 3/4th" an hour.  The flakes size are on medium/large size and our snow ratios must be high as the snow is very light and fluffy.  It is 27F and no wind at all.

Overhead lines are falling out of fashion, as you know, but buried power lines have a host of problems no one likes to address.

Side note - during Isaias, a distribution line fell on my driveway and front yard and PSEG decided it would be a nice lawn decoration for 3+ days. Got some very up close look at theone itself. Then I watched my neighbor bare hand it and I nearly passed out hahaha. He was so clueless about how close he came to being, well, "tada it's... Gone." (name that movie)

It wasn't after a storm, but we abruptly lost a phase one summer evening immediately after my daughter's birth. After spending half an hour exploring the house and figuring out if my family needed to leave for air conditioned alternatives, I almost walked into the downed power line across my driveway. Called Grid, LIPA and the FD. SCPD showed up, walked over to the line and while talking to me, went to touch it. I backed off and told him it's his funeral. Guy was extremely lucky the live end was up on the pole where it disconnected. Why he ever thought it was a good idea to go near a downed line still eludes me.

After all the miserable rain we have FINALLY changed over. Once there’s enough snow I’m making a dang snow angel

Just checked NWS P&C. Temps supposed to be 36 and raining, but is actually 34 and snowing when it does precipitate. Maybe we'll get a coating at the end?

From BTV's latest discussion.  The one thing I've learned living here for 8 years is that low Froude numbers are good for my area receiving snow.

Tonight: Favorable flow direction and subsidence will keep
Froude numbers low allowing moisture to bank along the slopes
of the Adirondacks and northern Green Mountains, resulting in
additional backside bonus snowfall.

Can you guess where my stove is (which my wife just used to burn asparagus *edit-artichoke*)? Also, it's cold enough and squalling hard enough to start sticking to the roof. Holding out hope for my kiddo, who didn't get to play in snow last winter.

Two things . Great dog looks just like mine but he hates snow and rain. And how come your better half is doing all of the work ?

Just back from a fire call...pretty quiet on the roads, but they're in good shape. Would guess maybe 4" down now. Snow has finally picked up and coming down at a moderate rate. Maybe get to 6" after all.

@StretchCT is going to start having his nervous tick .. no cover.  😄

My last Weber lasted 13 years and it was never covered.  I replaced it because it started having rusting issues at the bottom of the grill in the wheel support area.  After 13 years I was happy to have an excuse to give to my wife that I needed a new Weber because I was worried the old one would topple over one day.

Thanks for pointing out last week that the CAD model put me in the game.  I was able to track down some snow tires just in time for the storm.

I've stopped bothering with a grill cover here...wind constantly rips it off. Got tired of wandering the field perimeter trying to find it. Gets windy enough to send knock the grill over sometimes too....basically expecting that on Wednesday.

Nice storm here is south eastern NH.  I’m estimating 10” down so far and still coming down moderately.

Might be the 1st Pats game I’ll watch all year….they are terrible.
