  Mesoscale Discussion 0009
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0735 PM CST Sat Jan 06 2024

Areas affected...portions of southern New England

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 070135Z - 070730Z

SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy snow will slowly increase in coverage
across portions of southern New England this evening. Snowfall rates
of 1-2 in/hr are possible within the heaviest band late this evening
   into the overnight hours.

DISCUSSION...As of 0130 UTC, regional radar and surface analysis
showed a broad area of stratiform precipitation ongoing across parts
of the Mid Atlantic and southern New England. Associated with an
approaching coastal low, periodic moderate to heavy snow/rain has
been observed within this precipitation over the last several hours.
Slow northeastward progression of the heaviest precip has been noted
with the primary east-west oriented band stretching from
east-central PA to Long Island Sound. Driven by strong low-level
warm advection ahead of the deepening coastal low, moderate to heavy
snow should slowly increase in coverage over portions of southern
New England late this evening and into the overnight hours. Rates
between 1 to 2 in/hour are possible within the primary band, though
there remains some uncertainty on how quickly the heaviest snow will
lift northward. Light snow has already been reported across parts of
RI, MA and CT but, regional model soundings and observed ceilings
above 4k feet suggest some low-level dry air remains in place.
Inland moisture advection and the approach of the surface low should
slowly cool and moisten the low-level thermodynamic profile
sufficiently for higher snow rates after 03z. Periods of moderate to
heavy snow will likely continue into the overnight hours.

Closing in on 2.5. Got some gaps coming in the radar and just missed some really heavy snow by a few towns. Did a little videoing outside with the lights.  Nothing impressive.  Cold and quite breezy.

Been a fun day.

When I was coming home around 8:30, was pure rain and no slush on the roads.

Drove from western Suffolk to Central Suffolk and it was less slushy on main roads and further east. Parking lot and steps where we left were slick enough to pay attention

Ok we’re back to all snow.  Measured 6” here at the house at 953’ in the northern valley.  Hoping to get maybe another 2-3 overnight and tomorrow.   @TheComet you guys up there in the poconos have your own little micro climate lol.  Lucky you guys!  It’s like the tug hill of NEPA

Yeah elevation makes a big difference. I feel so guilty in a dirty way at times from this undeserved privilege. I lived in NYC 10 years and remember feeling so jealous over being left out from so many storms that hit the Poconos. But as luck would have it, ended up here as an adult in an unplanned way 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for your work!

Closing in on 11” here in Vernon, NJ.  I wonder if anyone plans to go skiing/snowboarding tomorrow?😂

I might use my credit card to buy the season pass at camelback. Too bad it doesn’t work at other ski resorts. I have guests staying until Monday who are winter averse. Else I’d be hitting the slopes tomorrow, hehehe.

I bought the season pass for MountainCreek for only $250 a month ago.  Reserved a parking spot tomorrow morning right at the base lodge so I will be skiing from the slopes right to the car.  At least I will get in a few runs before the mobs arrive. 👌❤️

Just a heads up that if we go on too long in a thread about the old site and it becomes a pile on, I'll just delete or hide those posts.  We've been through a lot and we all feel torn up about things, but we aren't here to pile on.  I'm ok with expressing displeasure now and then, I just don't want it turning into a bash session.

A little early to call it a bust...but home from the bar and maybe 1" down. Hard to tell with the winds howling, but suffice to say it's barely a flurry out there currently and the radar is not looking good. Meh...not the first time things haven't come together

Nice to hear from you Comet. Just joined this forum today. Glad to see the whole team is here. We were just in the Poconos last week. We'll deserved snow there. You are on the high plateau and should do well around 1900ft. Barrett Township should get slammed also.

Katherine! That’s right. Glad to see the old crew here as well.

Needless to say precip has ceased completely, 27F. Let’s see what/if tomorrow will bring

Precip has stopped here. Forecast 6"-10" ish, locally more, but maybe ended up with 2.5"-3". Looks like a slight glaze of ice as well.

Downgraded from winter storm warning to an advisory.

Same.

Light, very fine snow. Almost to 1/2", I should've stuck with my gut.

Certainly is a great site. No drama. Pure fun. And sexy at times. 😂

And only slightly psychotic

That was what made me stop posting over there, as well as the switch to subscription-only. I have a tight budget, and one shouldn’t have to pay to post. I think that the founder is his own worst enemy. I even had to completely change my handle so he wouldn’t unleash a similar diatribe on me.

Ouch

What is this "other site" some keep talking about? I have no such memories (or have buried them so deep that even I can't dig them back up)

I think we might approach 16”. I bet my 12” stick is buried by now.

I guess my call to not go visit my aunt in White Haven was the right call to make. She'da prolly handed me a shovel and said "would ya be a dear"? Her driveway is only maybe 30 yards long, but I'm getting on in years now.

Radar looks good, but good dendrites are probably only 5% of what's falling. The rest is either tiny, fractured, or grainy still.  Leaf blower stuff.

Seasonally chilly at 14.9°. almost 3/4" of very squeaky snow.

14.9? My face hurts just thinking about those values.
