TheRex
I went back to page one to read all the pages leading up to this storm. This thread was opened on December 6 with hopes of a big snowstorm somewhere on the east coast. There were some model runs giving hope but cold air was lacking and a miracle was needed. It seems on December 12 the posts started leaning toward a warm storm with rain and wind and hope was lost for snow. On Friday, Dec 15 the posts were weighted toward the wind issues that could come with this storm. Then the storm reports started on Sunday Dec 17 with reports of heavy rain in the southern areas. It was an interesting storm to track and good to know this community had the storm on its radar at least as early as December 6. Too bad this storm won't be remembered because of snow but instead will be remembered due to costs associated with the storm due to flooding and high winds. It is sad to see there have been some deaths from this storm and I hope there won't be more with the clean-up. Everyone stay safe!

Moderators telejunkie Posted December 19, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 19, 2023 (edited) Finished with 1.8" of rain, closest river gauge peaked just shy of moderate flood stage....so definitely lucked out in this area. Shocked that we didn't receive one fire call...I was prepared to spend the day and night at the firehouse. With the rise in extreme events around here, it's interesting how the same areas keep getting hit hardest. Irene is the only crest to make the top 5 flood events at that gauge in the last 20 years (started recording sometime in the 1980s). #upslope #rainshadow? Moderators Popular Post telejunkie Posted December 19, 2023 Moderators Popular Post Share Posted December 19, 2023 Have to share this as it got a good chuckle from me. Buddy in Maine had a spruce tree snap in yesterday's storm. So he had this bright idea... 1 6 1
jbrumberg
I took the roundabout way home from the postoffice ~noon and really did not see extensive downed tree debris. This area was lucky with this weather event. What is depressing is this year's # of all the dead and downed trees along our property's roadside😞. 1

Wayuphere
“Can’t git there from hereah….. Sums it up for us. Most of the local roads are blocked and closed. I followed the Fire Dept crews last evening doing chain saw work to try and keep one lane open on the main road to Bangor. They gave up eventually as it became unsafe and useless during the worst. A big tip of the hat to the small town EMS volunteers who were out running saws in that craziness!!!

Moderators StretchCT Posted December 20, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 20, 2023 (edited) Let's see if embedding tiktok this way works. Why yes it does. So instead of sharing the link, you have to copy the url. But in some cases it may continue through the entire library of videos of that producer. I guess we are lucky that there weren't more deaths from all this flooding. The erosion must be crazy in some of those areas.
Admin MaineJay Posted December 20, 2023 Admin Share Posted December 20, 2023 Still no power, and the inept people in charge of at CMP who decide how to message their customers can only tell us that they are still "assessing* a restoration time. I mean come on. Some folks haven't had power for 2 days already. They just don't get it. It's impossible to assess when 350k people will individually get their power back, we all know that, and we all know that it's going to take days, so just tell people that. You can't tell them your constantly assessing for days, how the hell can people plan? I know folks who keep thinking it's gonna turn on at any second, which it could, but it's been almost 2 days now for them. They've lost everything in their fridge, and still haven't a clue when they could get power on. It's like telling a pregnant woman they are assessing their due date after their water just burst. Good grief. They keep posting these dumb ass messages on the website about assessing. Basically giving us the Merriam-Webster definition at times, taking about helicopters and crews assessing this and that to get restoration times, yet they still haven't given anyone a time even though many have been restored. This is the latest garage, can you all feel how defensive this is? The line workers and boots in the ground people are awesome, the rest of this company is hot garbage. Notice how many times they use a form of "assess" Yes very frustrating. I'm on generator, so I'm fine, but too many people in the dark, especially when it comes to getting an honest "assessing". Quote All restoration starts with two key functions: 1) making the situation safe and 2) assessing the damage. Damage assessment is key to efficient restoration. When you see trucks driving in your neighborhood, know that they are likely assessing damage to determine the best plan for restoring power in the safest, quickest way possible. Our assessors inspect the damage and identify the crews (tree, pole setting, line) and equipment (poles, transformers, wires) needed to make repairs. Once the right crews and equipment for the job are assigned, we will have an estimate of when your power is likely to be restored and we will provide that estimate to you. We know it can seem frustrating and as if nothing is happening but, rest assured, we are on it – working to complete these initial steps of restoration as safely and quickly as possible. 2 1 2 1

The general incompetence of CMP and Versant is the reason I was a bit surprised the Pine Tree Power ballot initiative got hammered last month at the polls. I guess people just assume government ineptitude would be on the same scale or worse than the ineptitude of foreign controlled electric companies. We were lucky up here comparatively, and I got power back yesterday. In northern and eastern Maine, Versant has 53,799 without power out of 166,598 homes served and 767 active outages. They also offer the damage assessed line, "More specific information will be provided after damage is assessed". We as a state really need to assess the costs of these frequent large scale power outages vs. the cost of public works infrastructure projects to increase resiliency. Fortunately, it looks like Northern Maine will finally be connected to the American electric grid which is a move in the right direction, and will at least allow for some redundancy in the overall Maine grid, bringing power north to south. Hopefully things pick up today and you see power soon.

I'm sorry to hear about the situation out your way. I'd rather be told my electrical power will be out for two weeks then think it may be coming on any day now. Being able to plan helps us feel like we have some control over the situation. I hope it doesn't get too cold and people start having freezing pipe issues in their houses like Texas had to deal with last winter. Good luck! To help you pass the time, I created a drinking game for you. Every time you read the word "ass" in their press statement, you do a shot. MDBlueridge
So sorry to hear about the damage. What a terrible storm it was. Here in the hills it was a little rain and a little snow. But nothing terrible. Sorry to folks who are a dealing with these struggles at the holidays no less.
Wayuphere
I just picked my way to Bangor as the grocery stores are back in business and needed some non perishables. Not a Versant Power truck seen in the 40 mile round trip. Still many trees blocking roads with wires entangled. I’m thinking Christmas Day as a target for my area.(repeat of last year). 70mph SE winds in heavily wooded areas that consist of a lot of old growth trees that have never felt that wind push from the SE leads to this mess. At least we dodged the flooding. Wood stove cooking can be fun!!!

Dec 22 at 10pm 2012 derecho had us without power for 5 days I believe. Every one of those days was triple digits. Only relief was in the basement, we stayed down there in the unfinished basement the whole time. I absolutely empathize with anyone experiencing an extended power outage. 2
