Once that dry slot hits, right behind that line of storms, the wind just eerily died. It's so quiet that in the house I can hear the creek outside gushing. I'm wondering if it picks up again as the precip further west and down over NJ rolls through. Edited December 18, 2023 by StretchCT

Moderators StretchCT Posted December 18, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2023 Wind reports from Upton - all in text box and I think these will stand as the winds have died. Highlights include Stamford at 66, Fairfield at 60, Kew Garden at 60, Tappan Zee bridge at 65, Larchmont Harbor 64, Robbins Reef 66. Notable to me is the amount of 50+ observations inland. Places like Teterboro, White Plains Airport (HPN), Middletown (CT), Oxford (OXC) (CT), Meriden Airport. Precip is also in the report but most of those obs were earlier and it was still raining. There were a few places over 5" already. Moderators StretchCT Posted December 18, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2023 As far as coastal flooding, there are quite a few stations heading into high tide now that are near or just above flood stage and should flood. It doesn't look like anything beyond moderate will happen in the NYC/LI Sound area. Narraganset Bay looks to be the most impacted. https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/inundationdb/storm/East_Coast_Cyclone.html
Moderators StretchCT Posted December 18, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2023 (edited) Of course Newtown has the third highest. 20% of customers out, all around me is out. Not sure how I'm still online. Schools closed. Couldn't navigate all the road closures. Massachusetts now over 200k customers without power. Maine is up there too. jbrumberg
The lights flickered briefly once, but no electrical appliances PF'd. EverSource/NE Utilities have ongoing yearlong tree work to keep the roadside power lines clear of potential tree windfalls due to all the residential PVS producers around here.

Moderators StretchCT Posted December 18, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2023 Just got to Yale. My street is blocked by downed tree so had to go on 34 along the Housatonic which is way over its banks between Stevenson and Derby dams. At least a dozen homes flooded. Indian Wells park is a lake. Multiple side roads closed as well.

Moderators telejunkie Posted December 18, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2023 Just back home after spending the weekend away. Not much to report around here besides some patio furniture tossed out into my field and 1.5" in the gauge. Creeks are up, but more like a typical spring runoff event. Currently raining pretty good out there...so creeks are probably rising as I type. Luckily backend looks like it's approaching

I don't want to try to place blame or be bitter, but I think BTV underplayed the snow that was on the ground in the mountains. Yesterday they thought there was a 1" water equivalent on the ground due to their local reports, which was half of some report that must have been based on satellite data. I read their hydrology report yesterday and it seems things are much worse today than forecast.
Moderators StretchCT Posted December 18, 2023 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2023 (edited) Back from Yale, maybe that post didn't stick, but the Housatonic river between Derby and Stevenson dams is the highest I've seen. At least a dozen homes are surrounded by water. Roads remain closed. Our neighbors just got their power back. My road continues to be closed at one end. Total rain is 3.95" as I got another 1.15 on top of the 2.8 earlier. Brook in front continues to rage. Two uprooted trees confirmed. Yay, more firewood. The West river in New Haven empties into the Sound and has completely backed up to the Yale Bowl. Water everywhere. But saw a rainbow. TheRex
Currently 46 here and we've received 2.85" of rain so far. The rain today was never heavy, just consistent. Our high was 49 today and it seems the temp is starting to fall. The ground seemed fairly frozen before this event, so my yard is more like a swamp at the moment. If it only could have been 25 degrees colder, I'd be complaining about trying to find my driveway to clear it of the feet of snow.
