I'm thinking the UKIE was the closest as the storm reformed near NYC.  Euro too far north with it, GFS too far south. Results from 6z gfs analysis and spc analysis

This is from the NWS storm report page and there are some areas that received 6"

We ended up with 3" here but we are at 37F currently and not expected to dip below freezing tonight, so I don't expect it to last into Thanksgiving Day.

My drive tomorrow, up to Madawaska for Thanksgiving.  Will be fun…

IMG_4430.jpeg

Not a fun drive, about 6 hrs when normally 3.5 hrs on I95 as it was extended 35 mph speeds in a normal 75mph zone, single file interstate driving as the passing lane was a slushy nightmare.(counted 10 cars off the road who thought they could pass in it.😂)

Went from 4” at the house in Bradford to a high of approximately 8” near Mt Katahdin/Millinocket area, then back down to only about 2” up here on Long Lake/Madawaska.

Time for a beverage…..👍

New Limerick was the big winner here in Aroostook. I had just under 4" imby.

As to French in the St. John Valley, I think we are seeing a generational shift. I'm just about 20 miles from Van Buren and the wiki page says 76% of residents speak French while 44% in Caribou do. I doubt it. I think that was the case 30 years ago, but times have changed. I know few if any people younger than me who speak French on a daily basis.

In my family, my grandparents spoke French first. My mother learned French from a young age but In school she was specifically instructed to speak only English (there was a thing around that time and speaking French was taboo). I had an English first upbringing but at least at the time the school system offered bilingual classes which I took from 3rd grade onward and when I was with my grandmother it was mostly Franglaise, so I picked up enough to make sense of conversations.

It used to be you could go into any restaurant and overhear people speaking French.  Now I almost never hear French speakers and the once common valley accent is slowly dying.

The world is a different place where there are no longer the isolated pockets of people that existed only a generation ago, which makes everyone a little more the same as mirco-regional cultures become diluted in this connected age.

@Mainiac this is a seriously wonderful and insightful post. Makes me think about how quickly "Appalachian speak" is being lost.

Hope all had a great Thanksgiving!!! As far as those snow totals, I believe we went through every one listed except Woodland, Ashland and St Pamphile.  Totals look accurate though rain/drizzle made it up to the border and compacted.
Surprisingly slick drive back today as we started out just as some squalls came through with the cold front.  Bare ground once down to the Bangor area as the changeover to rain erased  Wednesdays storm. Had 4” of snow in Bradford Wednesday morning when we left in the snow, that’s all gone as .66 of rain fell after the switch.
As far as the French Canadian language, the family my daughter married into from Madawaska who we visit frequently, tend to mix French and English, mid sentence.  I can “almost” keep up.  Sadly the older adults all say the same thing about discouragement of speaking French  when they were at school. Up to the families now to pass on their heritage. My daughter is making sure my 6 y/o grandson learns to converse in it. Only place we heard it spoken was around the dinner table.  Love it and the St John valley. If you’ve been, you’d know why…
