January 19-20, 2023 | NE/Mid-Atl Winter Storm

It was garbage night so I made a couple of passes down the driveway with the snowblower.  At 10 pm the snow is light and we have received 4".  The front end was a really good thump.  Radar looks like we are mostly done with the snow for now.  Supposedly we will get some more tomorrow.

The snow wasn't as wet as I feared so my snowblower cut through it like a hot knife through butter.

Nothing huge, but looks like winter.

Looks like a little lull before some better returns move in. Radar moving slower than the first batch, that was hauling.

Thanks for sharing pics! It's the only snow fix I can get right now. Living vicariously through you Mainers.

stopped snowing, 7" inches down, 28˚image.thumb.jpeg.3a2150a8975adefb71ddc9e7c3df22f5.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.201cec51c842a163acb0a557479c28ff.jpeg

We might be able to catch the inverted trof as it rotates through with the upper level energy. Models have a hard time nailing these down, even at the last minute.

Round two of snow started here about 30 minutes ago. Forecast is for a possible couple additional inches today but I will be surprised to see that much as the radar seems to lackmuch moisture up this way.

Looks like Maine is the place to be for this storm.

BTV's snowfall totals through 7 am.  I lucked out and live just far enough to have gotten in the slightly better snows.  Most of our snow fell in less than 3 hours.  Snow has picked up here this morning and maybe we get an inch or two, but the temps are just above freezing.

The roads were plowed well this morning and the school bus seemed to right on time.  So a shout out to the people clearing the roads in the middle of the night while I sleep.  Thanks for doing a job that probably gets more undeserved complaints than deserved praise.

About six inches here in Lebanon, ME. Sticking to the trees pretty good - had very light snow throughout the day but the vast majority of snow fell last night. Hopefully we add to this with the storms in queue next week - I haven't had my snowshoes out for almost 3 years now!

Snow was supposed to end around 1 pm but snow picked back up tonight and it looks like the snow is coming down the Champlain Valley from Montreal.  Surprised to see the moderate intensity of snow tonight.  BTV added a paragraph to their latest forecast discussion.  I don't think this was showing up in the models.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 423 PM EST Friday...Quick update to increase pops/qpf here
in the CPV as radar is showing an increase in areal coverage of
snow with BTV vis btwn 1/2sm and 3/4sm in light to moderate
snow. Water vapor shows embedded s/w near the International
Border while mid lvl moisture remains in deformation axis acrs
northern NY into VT. This combined with weak developing low
level caa and strongly blocked flow with froude <0.25 wl result
in several hours of light snow with intervals of moderate snow
possible at times here in the CPV. Eventually the northerly flow
aloft wl push much drier air from north to south acrs our cwa
btwn 04z-07z, resulting in less areal coverage of snow showers
and a quick drying trend. Given vis restrictions and temps
hovering near freezing, would not be surprised of developing
slick spots during the evening commute, especially northern CPV
and parts of the western slopes. Additional snowfall wl range
from a dusting to 2 to 4 inches in localized spots along the
western slopes above 1000 feet. Have bumped qpf and snowfall to
match this thinking and tweaked temps to capture crnt trends.

9:45 pm:  28F and the snow continues.  I just went out and measured and we have 2" of new snow tonight. I want to check local reports tomorrow but I think we've picked up 7" since this storm started last night. Tonight was a nice bonus. I have a feeling the snow plow operators I mentioned earlier today were not expecting to have to work tonight.

We ended up with a total of 7" from this storm.  Several of the inches fell in the first couple hours and then another inch yesterday and then 2 unexpected inches last night.

This is BTV's snowfall map from 7 am Friday morning to 7 am Saturday morning.  I live in the blue dot of 3" snow just south of Burlington.  I think we had a little bit of lake enhancement in the area since Champlain is mostly ice free.  I drove up to one of the local ski areas earlier and the mountains may not have received as much new snow as we did from this storm.  BTV mentioned low Froude numbers yesterday, which I believe keeps the snow in the valley area rather than crossing the mountains.

I stopped on the drive back from the mountain to get this pic.  At our borderline temps yesterday, snow was sticking to everything.  It is nice to see some white again rather than bare trees.
