Why are clouds such assholes?

People: hey clouds, we need you to stay away when the sun goes down so we can drop some temp quickly and maximize this snowstorm ok?

Clouds: no. <extremely thick blanket of clouds rolls in half hour before sunset>

Temps: rise from 34 to 39

People: hey clouds, we need a thick layer to come in and hold in some warmth to avoid an ugly icy mess in the morning ok?

Clouds: bye. <sun sets on a cloudless sky>

Temps: immediately drop from 40 to 33

Question, especially for any of you nws affiliated people out there.

28 and rain. How does that work, scientifically?

For anyone that followed my questions earlier, they changed it to something that makes a lot more sense:

Nice and cold up this way. Looks like onset about 8, 8:30 if that first batch survives. Most short rangers have a good 4-6 hours of snow before changing over early to mid PM. Might eek out around 2". Thats the bar for "winning" on this one for me.  Less than that, no surprise, mostly expected for days.
