...EYE OF IAN NOW MOVING OVER THE DRY TORTUGAS...

The Key West International Airport recently reported a sustained 
wind of 52 mph (84 km/h) with a gust to 66 mph (106 km/h).  An 
elevated WeatherFlow station at Smith Shoal Light reported a 
sustained wind of 61 mph (98 km/h) with a gust of 91 mph (146 km/h).

As someone who works on planes just like those every day, this hits close to home. Those folks had a quick easy ride to safer territory, but they weren't supposed to be in the danger zone. One tornado or microburst later, poof!

Note that those airplanes were tied down. You can still some of the ropes. You can see where some buckled the wing rather than the rope letting go. Takes some intense wind for that to happen (or a period of intense gusts to bounce one of the ropes loose, which can happen with normal tie-down knots).

But it happens more often than you might think. The military had 10 helicopters severely damaged (>$2.5M each) by a severe thunderstorm right here in VA this summer, though those likely weren't tied down.
