That's a hard pass from me. Way too much winter in the winter. I'm at 2 100 degree days so far and it's really not bad because dew points bottom out. Dew points have been in the upper 60s lately and people talk about how humid/muggy it is. Compared to what people here are used to, sure, but that says a lot about what a normal summer is like here. I'll put it like this... I'd rather have a 100+ degree day here than a 90+ degree day in Ohio. Moderators StretchCT Posted July 11, 2023 Author Moderators Share Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Water temp by Johnson Key is over 96. Granted it's probably not the deepest water, but my hot tub is 102. Key West was 92. Vaca Key was also 92. Blackwater sound is 94.8. Moderators StretchCT Posted July 11, 2023 Author Moderators Share Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Here's a little more on the hot water around Florida. There is a thread on this and confirms that it is not normal. Adding another tweet with a some stats for the week so far Will also note that Sebastian Inlet is also hot. Just had a tstorm roll through too. Edited July 11, 2023 by StretchCT 1

If a tropical cyclone comes in that is under favorable conditions, then it would literally explode in intensity and stop at nothing to become extremely powerful extremely quickly. Yeah. If ever there was a time for the Nino to do Nino shit to the hurricanes it would be this year. Swimming in water that warm is actually unpleasant since it's warmer than the air. I wonder what the water temps in this area were right before the labor day hurricane 1935.

Moderators StretchCT Posted July 18, 2023 Author Moderators Share Posted July 18, 2023 Phoenix also just set the record for highest low temperature on Monday of 95 (previous low 93). And today was the 19th day over 110 in a row, also a new record. NWS forecast has over 110 for the foreseeable future.

Moderators StretchCT Posted July 24, 2023 Author Moderators Share Posted July 24, 2023 West coast water temps are fascinating. I realize there are currents that cause this, but the Gulf of Alaska and Oregon coast are warmer than the water in CA. By a lot. Point Arena is 48.6F While the Gulf of Alaska nearly 2000 miles north is 56.3. And to just 500 miles north is Astoria at 62F, which may be affected by the Columbia River, or not... I went to the Galapagos Islands for my Honeymoom. Right on the equator and water temperature was 66. Guess that's why there are penguins there. 2
Moderators StretchCT Posted July 25, 2023 Author Moderators Share Posted July 25, 2023 (edited) Just following 40N the water right off the west coast is 10°C and the coldest anywhere along that line, by quite a bit. Just 300 mile west and the temp is near 20c. 300 miles north or south and it's 18c. Currents there are only 0.1 to 0.5kts. It's just that one spot that makes me wonder how/why. Looking at the NW Atlantic, we have even greater spread of temps over 300 miles. From 40N you can get to Nova Scotia and Bay of Fundy where water temps are 14c and 11c compared to 27c near the gulf stream. But seeing the gulf stream cutting that area off, it makes more sense that it's colder water. And if I zoomed out I can see the Labarador current funneling down the Arctic waters. But it still amazes me that the water off 64.5N Iceland is warmer than the water off 40N California Edited July 25, 2023 by StretchCT

Maybe there's some upwelling going on there.

The impact these water temps would have on a hurricane cannot be overlooked or overstated really. The water has been warming steadily for years and we've already seen how fast the storms seem to go from ok strengthening a bit to HOLY FUCK I HOPE THIS CAT 4/CAT5 BORDERLINE MONSTER GOES OUT TO SEA. So that could be causing the upwelling. Edited July 26, 2023 by StretchCT
